Best of 2008: Weinland

THE BEST of 2008 (so far!) SERIES :

Weinland could be one of the best bands to emerge from the latest generation of talent. This is original songcraft but it would be easy to mistake the soulful guitar and organ for something written by Neil Young. I am listening as I type these words and I can almost see Young's silhouette climbing over another series of heartaches as Weinland frontman John Adam Weinland Shearer emits another low and steady line of woe.

A truly different Kind of Talent:

Weinland is just wicked!

The year is 2008 and what you do have is one of the best independent rock bands to ever be influenced by Neil Young and his contemporaries. Portland's Weinland (Badman Recordings) is embarking on their first ever national tour in support of La Lamentor - a stellar new release. This is a band you should know about!

NEW RELEASE: FOUR of FIVE STARS

Weinland - "La Lamentor"

Dark, Sad and Beautiful - La Lamentor is an epic and stirring affair. It's the perfect collection of songs for so many types of days (both the bad and the good). As for channeling the living ghost of Neil Young, just listen to "Gold", "With You Without You", or "Sick As A Gun." - But the band is so much more than a breathing homage to Mr. Young. There are echoes of Elliott Smith and even Nick Drake contained in these rich songs.

Weinland joins some pretty incredible company - The Best of the First Half 2008 List is coming - but here are some of the records we have told you made the list in recent days: album, album, album, album, album, album, album, album, album, album, album, and album. Think of it as a shopping list of contemporary good taste and this list will continue to grow until it needs to - you can check out 2007's Hot List for the First Half, here.)
